Calla Lilies for a Classy Broad

Chic, charming and always in style, calla lilies are the perfect flower for the classy lady in your life. Be it a birthday, anniversary, thank you or yoo-hoo sort of occasion, these elegant blooms have panache and character that make them stand out from the rest of the bunch. When you just can’t seem to think of a good gift, the gift of flowers is always one she’ll be sure to use.

Native to parts of southern Africa, the calla lily is known for its single, iconic petal that swirls around a central axis. This type of flower is called a spadix and is similar to the one on a peace lily, with which it shares a family. With only a handful of different species, all in the genus Zantedeschia, all of them have showy flowers that come in a range of colors from white to yellow, purple or shades of red and orange. While found growing originally in only a small geographical region, the alluring beauty of the calla lily has lead to it being cultivated on every continent on Earth except Antarctica.

Prized for both their pretty petals as well as their fabulous foliage, calla lilies are popular garden plants in warm, tropical climates, but most of us will have to enjoy them with a little help from our florist as a cut flower. Cultivated extensively in California, Colombia, Kenya and New Zealand, plant breeders have been introducing a variety of new colors and sizes, so try out a little something different with new non-white cultivars. Smaller in size, but full of color, the cultivar “Red Mango” or “Pot of Gold” come in red and gold and look amazing in a bouquet or arrangement mixed with torch gingers or dendrobium orchids. Sultry colors, such as the deep purple “Night Cap” or fabulous fuchsia one, “Pillow Talk,” go well with orange roses or red hypericum berries. Try paring a medium or large one of any color with the exotic bird of paradise for a tropical, but simple look or all white with a bit of silvery dusty miller or seeded eucalyptus for an elegant occasion.

With bare stems without any distracting leaves, let calla lilies strut their stuff without any distracting greens. One of the best ways to show off this very feminine flower is in a clear glass vase with several different shades of just calla lilies. This flower doesn’t like to share the spotlight.

DIY Dish Gardens are a Delightful Office Gift

Shopping for coworkers is never easy, but promotions, retirements, new babies and get well soon’s happen a lot in a busy office. One of the joys of giving plants or flowers is that there is not an occasion when they won’t be received as a thoughtful and appreciated gift. Flowers dazzle and delight for the week or two they remain fresh, but why not pick up something for your colleague that the whole office can enjoy for many years to come with a few houseplants? Green, indoor plants not only add aesthetic value, they are also shown to reduce indoor air pollution by filtering toxins out of the ambient air during the process of photosynthesis. A mixture of several different kinds of houseplants together in a container is called a dish garden, and whether your office is bright and sunny or a little limited on windows, these do it yourself combination of houseplants are easy to put together and sure to please.

Low Light Environment
Many of the houseplants we enjoy come from tropical areas with fairly consistent, warm temperatures that grow in the understory of other larger trees. This makes them uniquely suited for inside our homes or offices with fairly consistent conditions as well. While all plants need some amount of light, there are several houseplants that tolerate lower levels than others. If your coworker works in a cubicle with little access to natural sunlight, there are several good choices that can be mixed together in a basket or container that will thrive in a low light environment.
PothosPothos– Sometimes called Devil’s Ivy or Golden Pothos, this shade tolerant, vining plant with heart-shaped leaves makes a great addition to a dish garden because of its trailing nature. Over time it will cascade down the side of the container or can be trained up a string to grow up a wall.
ArrowheadArrowhead– A popular houseplant with tall, upright leaf stems and arrowhead shaped leaves, many cultivars of this plant exist. Some have colorful stripes or colors along the margins of the leaves and look great next to pothos in a container. You can plant them together or simply put one small plastic pot of each in a basket and top with some sphagnum moss (available at a garden center or craft store) for decoration.

High Light Environment
If your colleague has scored an office with a window or simply lights up the room with their own personality, try out one of these amazing light-loving houseplants.
HoyaHoya– A fun, climbing vine, this plant loves a lot of light, but needs very little water or care in case your coworker has a perpetually full inbox. Give it a bright window and something to climb over like the handle of a decorative basket where you can add some colorful Croton plants or Dracenea. If you are lucky, you may get to see it blooming one day with large, pink clusters.
Jade PlantJade Plant– This succulent plant has round, fleshy leaves on stems that bend and turn over time to create a classic form. Placed in a sunny window, this plant will thrive with very little care and last them though retirement.

Anemones for Administrative Professional’s Day

Secretary, administrative professional, office support staff- whatever their title, this person deserves more than a vase of flowers once a year for putting up with you every day, so make it count with beautiful anemones. These spring-time lovelies are delicate and sweet, but can handle the day-to-day pressure of being a cut flower in a vase full of crazy leaves and will look stunning on that desk, even as it piles up with paperwork. At their prime in April, just in time for Administrative Professional’s Day, anemones will light up the office and the faces of your support staff.

Anemones are native to temperate regions all around the world, so they come in a diversity of colors and sizes. Deep reds, light pinks and dark purples look fantastic mixed together in a short, glass vase or tucked into a small arrangement. While these blooms are a bit pricier than typical carnations or daisies, you only need a few to make a big impact. One well formed anemone in a vase or mixed in with a few other stems will really tie the whole arrangement together and give it a classy look, much like a good administrative assistant.

Featured heavily in myths and literature, the anemone (sometimes known as windflower) has a wide variety of meanings and symbolism. In the language of flowers, the anemone is thought to represent anticipation and ward off evil. In Japan, this flower is associated with sincerity. Ovid tell in Metamorphoses how this flower was created by the goddess Venus and sprinkled onto the Earth. Who wouldn’t feel like a goddess with a vase of anemones on their desk.

The blooms of the anemone are both bold and fragile looking. The cultivars most florists carry have flowers that range between 2-3 inches across with soft, wide petals surrounding an often dark center. The contrast between the petals and center of the flower is striking and the red variety resemble poppies, but will last longer in a vase and carry less pollen in case allergies are an issue. Leaves are long and whimsical with palm-shaped blades and a frilly collar just beneath the flower head. They tend to last longer than most leaves and may be used instead of additional greens. While these blooms are hard to ignore, they are also less common than other cut flowers and will be sure to have people stopping to ask what they are on their way to the copy room.

We don’t always remember to say thank you to the folks that help make things happen at work, so leave a lasting impression of gratitude with a flower that speaks for itself.

Best Flowers to Send a Man to Celebrate a Promotion

Congratulating a man on his promotion may call for some slaps on the back and brews after work, but the best way to welcome him to that corner office on the first day is a vase full of anthuriums. These tall, tropical flowers, sometimes called Flamingo Lilies, have a certain stateliness to them and a rather masculine appearance that makes them appropriate for tough guys and softies alike. While the bright red variety gives off a sense of power, the meaning of this bloom in the language of flowers symbolizes hospitality. A vase or potted container full of anthuriums sends the message that he’s the guy in charge, but the door is always open.

Native to the New World, the anthurium was first identified in parts of Mexico and the Caribbean. Diverse and widespread around the Americas, there are several hundred different species that range in size, shape and color. The one most typically available at flower shops and garden centers have a red or green spade-shaped, brightly-colored, upright “petal,” which is actually a botanical adaptation called a bract. This bract is more like a leaf than a petal and stays turgid and colorful for several weeks. It can come in orange, yellow, pink, white or green. The actual “flower” is a type called a spadix, which is a densely spiraled appendage that sticks straight up from the bract. The image this flower exudes is that of, ahem, virility and masculine prowess; perfect for pumping him up the first few days on the new job!

One of the advantages in choosing this flower to celebrate a promotion is that it can be bought as a cut flower in a vase or arrangement, but is also sold as a houseplant. Needing very little care other than good soil, regular watering and medium to bright light, this little guy will thrive and grow to heights of 1-3 feet in a container with good drainage. What better way to celebrate the move from a dark cubicle to an office with a view than to give him a plant to put there! Rather than lasting a few weeks, this potted plant will grow and develop along with him.
Evolutionarily, the anthurium is a complex plant. Part of the aroid family, this unique bloom evolved recently and has one of the strangest flowering morphologies of any plant on Earth. Many plants in this family are thermogenic, meaning they are able to produce their own heat. Quite possibly, this developed to attract pollinators through the heating and releasing of pheromones and some of them can reach temperatures of over 100F, which will make your guy seem cool under pressure in comparison.

The Right Summer Flowers: Mokara and Dendrobium Orchids

The great thing about summer flowers is that, because they are in season, you can often snag them up for a bargain! One fantastic bargain to grab are orchids, specifically, mokara and dendrobium orchids. Unlike their planted counterparts, mokara and dendrobium orchids are spectacular for a perfect summertime bouquet.

Mokara orchids come in a stunning array of  shapes and colors, including pink, orange, purple, red, yellow and burgundy. Mokara orchids are hybrid orchids, and boast anywhere from 8-12 blooms on each stem. Dendrobium is a large genus of orchids that was established in 1799 and contains almost 1,200 species of flowers. The Dendrobium name comes from the Greek words for tree and life, and translates to “one who lives on trees.”

There are currently between 21,000 and 27,000 different accepted species of orchids, and so there are many different symbolic meanings of orchids as a whole. Generally, orchids are considered a symbol of love, beauty or royalty. In Ancient Greece, orchids were symbols of virility and fertility, and during the Victorian era in Europe, the orchid symbolized elegance and luxury. Pink orchids symbolize love and affection and are typically given on the 14th wedding anniversary.

Orchids are a perfect gift to give to a loved one in just about any situation – a birthday, anniversary, congratulations, or just because! Because summertime is when they bloom, it is a perfect time to snap up some of the best pricing available!

A bouquet of mokara orchids, such as this one, features a vibrant array of gold, orange and hot pink mokara orchids. This bouquet of in-season orchids is normally about $40 and is now only $30.

If you tend towards dendrobium orchids, a beautiful bouquet such as this one, which features jade green, white, and bi-colored purple and white blooms, is a gorgeous option. Like the mokara orchid arrangement, dendrobium orchid bouquets are running about $10 cheaper than their usual price.

And if you can’t decide between the mokara and dendrobium orchid, there are lovely bouquets that blend both, so that you can have the best of both worlds!

Orchids are a timeless and universal flower that are perfect for just about any person, and any situation. Summertime is the perfect time to snap these beauties up for a bargain!

The Right Flowers for Everyone and Anyone

You may know the perfect flower for your child, your spouse and your best friend, but picking out flowers for someone you don’t know well can be tough. The right flowers for one person may not be the right flowers for everyone. What happens when you want to send a flower bouquet to someone you don’t know very well? Perhaps a congratulatory flower bouquet or a sympathy flower bouquet is needed for someone you know, but don’t know well enough to know their taste. Here are a few bouquet options that are universally appropriate:

Yellow Roses and Peruvian Lilies

This bouquet is the perfect universal bouquet for several reasons! For starters, the cheerful yellow color is appropriate for a man or a woman. Yellow roses signify friendship, but some may still feel uncomfortable sending a bouquet of strictly roses to someone who is just an acquaintance. Because this bouquet is cut with Peruvian lilies, it gives this bouquet a more casual feel and is appropriate for just about anyone.

The Peace and Prosperity Money Tree

The message of good fortune and positive outcome is also a great message for anyone, in just about any situation. This tree comes having grown for 4 years and has a beautiful braided trunk, topped off with a red bow and a lucky Sacagawea Dollar coin.

A Bouquet of Orchids

This stunning bouquet features orchids, whose iconic shape is universal. Long stems of orchids are elegant and would be appreciated by anyone. The orange Mokara Orchids symbolize warmth, while the jade Dendrobium orchids symbolize peace and tranquility. The juxtaposition of the warm orange hues with the cool green hues is an excellent choice for anyone, and will have a sensational impact on anyone who receives them.

With a little creativity, you can find flowers for everyone and anyone, no matter male or female, coworker or other acquaintance. Any one of these bouquets will convey appropriate well wishes, regardless of event. Make someone’s day special!

The Right Faux Flowers

Faux flowers often get a bad rap, but that is because when people think of fake flowers, they picture the hideous plastic flowers that adorned an elderly relative’s home when they were kids. Dollar store fake flowers are a perfect example of the unattractive faux floral arrangements that we picture when we think of them. The truth is that there are a lot of high-end faux floral arrangements that are delicately crafted to look like the real thing. Faux floral arrangements are a great way to beautify a space without having to constantly replace real bouquets when they die. They are also an excellent option for those who are allergic to flowers. Here are a few of our favorite, high-end faux flower arrangements!

The Jane Seymour Collection

Actress Jane Seymour partnered with flower giant FTD to develop a stunning collection of silk flowers. Ranging in price from about $40-$330, these gorgeous arrangements are beautifully arranged and will fool any passer-by who stops to admire them. The array of flowers offered in their arrangements is impressive: calla lilies, roses, peonies, magnolias, ranunculus and orchids. Among our favorite Jane Seymour silk flower arrangements is the Botanicals White Garden Bouquet in a white vase. This stunning arrangement features a white, cream and soft lime green color scheme, and boasts a lush arrangement of ranunculus and vibumum. Complete with a flared glass vase and faux water for a full illusion, this bouquet is representative of the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail found through the collection.

The Smithsonian Collection

The Smithsonian collection features an extensive range of live orchids, but also offers several silk orchids that are worthy of their real counterparts. Ranging from $30 to $200, the benefit of faux orchids is not just that they require no upkeep, other than dusting, but that they are a safe alternative for households with pets, given that orchids are generally toxic to animals. The jaw-dropping beauty and elegance of these potted plants will surprise anyone who finds out that they are not real, as every detail, down to the leaves and moss, are represented in stunning detail. For those who are looking for the popular, one-stem look, they offer silk cymbidium orchids, cattleys orchids and phalaenopsis orchids. For those who prefer a fuller look, the collection features silk oncidium and full cymbidium orchids.

While faux flowers have historically gotten a bad rap, these luxurious options show that you don’t have to sacrifice authenticity for longevity.

Be Sure to Send the Right Flowers This Secretary’s Day

Secretary’s Day, or more properly Administrative Professionals Day, falls in 2010 on Wednesday April 21. Recognizing the work of secretaries, administrative assistants, and receptionists (those physically present, as well as those who work “virtually”) is something you probably do every work day, with a thank you and a smile of genuine appreciation. Administrative Professional’s Day is a wonderful opportunity, although an unofficial holiday, to acknowledge all the unsung administrative support professionals who do their best to ensure your work day is safe, smooth and productive.

What are the best flowers for Secretary’s Day?

Pink Rose BouquetSending a message of gratitude and appreciation, you can’t go wrong with dark pink roses elegantly to express your thanks, without being a romantic overture. Order a delightful Pink Rose Bouquet with light pink alstroemeria from our recommended online florist now.

Hydrangeas also symbolize gratitude, and we would have recommended them except that two of the other meanings they carry are vanity, and frigidity. Neither is a message you want to send to one of your closest working colleagues, is it? Another alternative would be the sweet pea, but these are fragile blooms that don’t always hold up well to delivery.

FTD Thank You BouquetFinally, our recommended online florist (FlowersFast) offers same day delivery for the following “thank you” bouquets, provided you order before noon. The first is a Thank You Bouquet of orange gerbera daisies nestling amongst fuchsia carnations, lavender traditional daisies and white mini carnations, arranged in a designer vase inscribed with the words thank you. The second is the Many Thanks Bouquet in beautiful light pink shades, including roses, ranunculus, Gerbera daisies, and lilies, and complemented by white snapdragons and larkspur.

However you show your appreciation this Secretary’s Day, there’s really no better way than with a beautiful floral gift delivered to the office. Your administrative staff will appreciate your recognition of their efforts, and seeing a bright and colorful bouquet of flowers on display will lift their spirits and make them smile. You will be the best boss ever, as well as benefiting from increased morale and productivity.
