Boutonnieres have made a bit of a comeback in the wedding world as more brides in this economy are embracing the “DIY wedding” mentality. Weddings are becoming more personal and unique than ever, and boutonnieres are not excluded in this.
Boutonnieres have been around for a long time and used to be worn on a daily basis. Meaning “buttonhole” in French, it was typically pushed through the top buttonhole on a gentleman’s lapel. Because modern day lapels don’t typically have that extra buttonhole, boutonnieres are now usually fastened to the lapel with a pin.
While roses, carnations and orchids are the traditional flowers used to adorn a man’s lapel, we have assembled a few unique flower ideas to consider:
- Uluhe Ferns or, Fern Curls: Fern curls are making an appearance in the boutonnieres of grooms and groomsmen alike. Dark brown to black in appearance, the fern curls at the end of the shoot, giving it a simple, yet exotic look. The ferns can be featured alone, or paired with other flowers, as shown in this example from My Wedding. - Succulents: Succulents lend a cool, sophisticated look to the boutonniere. If your wedding colors are muted and subtle, or your groom is not a fan of flowers, succulents may be the way to go! The other benefit to using succulents is that they are prone to growing in dry-climates, so they hold up well without water on a hot day, against a black tux jacket. Bohemian Bouquets sells some gorgeous succulent boutonnieres that you can order online. - Wheat: Wheat tops are making an appearance in boutonnieres and are a gorgeous, unexpected option for rustic weddings, or simple themes. Wear a bundle of them alone, or pair them with other blooms, such as this boutonniere featured on the Independent Wedding Association (link: http://independentwedding.com/page/8/)
The sky is the limit when it comes to creating your perfect boutonniere, and with a little imagination, you can create something spectacular!
